Welcome to Bodelwyddan Solar

The Bodelwyddan Solar project is a new renewable energy scheme with solar and battery storage on the border of Conwy and Denbighshire, North Wales.

The project will provide a source of renewable energy generation to help reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the Government’s target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The project directly supports the UK Government’s commitment to making the UK a clean energy superpower by tripling solar power generated by 2030.

As part of the planning process for a Development of National Significance (DNS), we held a 42-day statutory consultation that ended in October 2025.

After receiving feedback from technical consultants, community stakeholders and local residents, we have made some changes to the plans before we submit our application in May 2026.

Please read on for more information about how our plans have changed.

About us

The Bodelwyddan Solar project is being developed by Bodelwyddan Solar & Energy Storage Limited, part of Island Green Power (IGP). Established in 2013, we are a leading developer of utility-scale solar projects and battery storage systems. We have successfully delivered nearly 40 solar projects worldwide that have generated more than 3GW of energy capacity. This includes 21 projects in the UK.

We deliver renewable energy solutions that create lasting value for the communities we serve, protecting the environment while fostering economic growth and energy independence.

In the UK, we are contributing to the goal of becoming a clean energy superpower and achieving net zero by 2050. We are also contributing to the Welsh Government’s net-zero goals.

The Project

The Bodelwyddan Solar project will consist of a solar farm located to the northwest of Bodelwyddan, which could generate up to 110MW of electricity. This will be connected to Bodelwyddan Substation via underground cables.

Changes to our proposals

Whilst there were no significant objections to the BESS element of the project during the statutory consultation in September and October 2025, following further technical and engineering considerations including the NESO grid reform process, a decision was made to remove the BESS from this planning application. In addition, the proposed substation has been moved to the solar site.

No above ground development is proposed at the BESS Site. However, the cable route is still required to connect the solar farm to Bodelwyddan substation.

The solar panels will be fixed rather than tracker panels, meaning a 1-metre reduction in height from 4.5m to 3.5m above ground at their highest point, that will lessen the visual impact from neighbouring properties and nearby roads.

In addition, permissive footpaths have been added to the solar site to provide some public access and improve connectivity in the area.

Solar Site

  • The solar site is located at Land at Rhuddlan Road and has an overall area of 168.95 hectares.
  • According to our soil surveys, over 93% of the site is in on Grade 3b or below agricultural land and as such is not classed as Best and Most Versatile (BMV) agricultural land.
  • There is also an existing solar farm in the southern section of the solar site which has been operational since 2015.

The Opportunity

  • Bodelwyddan Solar could:

  • Generate up to 110MW of electricity

  • Save up to 35,569 tonnes of CO² per year

  • Provide enough power to meet the annual electricity demands of 26,657 homes.

The project will also include provision of a Community Benefit Fund to support local projects, should the application receive consent.

Consultation

We are a community-led developer and have consulted closely with local communities, stakeholders and policy makers throughout the project planning process to understand concerns then use feedback to improve our designs.

After introducing our emerging proposals in early 2025 and running our statutory consultation in Autumn 2025, we have been considering comments and refining our plans to produce the best possible scheme before submitting our detailed proposals to the Welsh Government.

These proposals, which have been influenced by a review of the feedback we received during the statutory consultation and conversations with the community, form the basis of the proposals we are planning to submit in May 2026.
