Welcome to Bodelwyddan Solar and Energy Storage

The Bodelwyddan Solar & Energy Storage project is a new renewable energy scheme with solar and battery storage on the border of Conwy and Denbighshire, North Wales.

The project will provide a source of renewable energy generation and storage to help reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the Government’s target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The project directly supports the UK Government’s commitment to making the UK a clean energy superpower by tripling solar power generated by 2030.

As part of the planning process for a Development of National Significance (DNS), we are now holding a 42-day statutory consultation that ends on Tuesday 21 October 2025.

You can view all of our planning documents that will accompany our planning application HERE.

About us

The Bodelwyddan Solar and Energy Storage project is being developed by Bodelwyddan Solar & Energy Storage Limited, part of Island Green Power (IGP). Established in 2013, we are a leading developer of utility-scale solar projects and battery storage systems. We have successfully delivered nearly 40 solar projects worldwide that have generated more than 3GW of energy capacity. This includes 21 projects in the UK.

We deliver renewable energy solutions that create lasting value for the communities we serve, protecting the environment while fostering economic growth and energy independence.

In the UK, we are contributing to the goal of becoming a clean energy superpower and achieving net zero by 2050. We are also contributing to the Welsh Government’s net-zero goals.

The Project

The Bodelwyddan Solar and Energy Storage project will consist of a solar farm located to the northwest of Bodelwyddan, which could generate up to 110MW of electricity, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) site to the south of St Asaph Business Park which can store up to 110 MW of electricity.

The two sites are separate but will be connected via underground cables.

The point of connection is Bodelwyddan substation, which is adjacent to the BESS site.

Solar Site

  • The solar site is located at Land at Rhuddlan Road and has an overall area of 168.95 hectares.
  • According to our soil surveys, over 93% of the site is in on Grade 3b or below agricultural land and as such is not classed as Best and Most Versatile (BMV) agricultural land.
  • There is also an existing solar farm in the southern section of the solar site which has been operational since 2015.

BESS Site

  • The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) site is located on Land to the west of Bodelwyddan substation, south of St Asaph Business Park.
  • It has an overall area of 6.52 hectares.
  • The site is located on Grade 3b and below agricultural land and is not therefore BMV land.
  • The BESS will be connected to the solar site by around 8km of underground cabling. The cable route will follow field boundaries and existing tracks through Kinmel Park and the highway verge adjacent to Glascoed Road.

The Opportunity

Bodelwyddan Solar and Energy Storage project consists of two elements – a solar site and a battery energy storage system (BESS) site.

  • The solar site could:

  • Generate up to 110MW of electricity

  • Save up to 35,569 tonnes of CO² per year

  • Provide enough power to meet the annual electricity demands of 26,657 homes.

  • The BESS site could:

  • Store up to 110MW of electricity during times of high renewable energy generation and discharge it when demand is high or renewable generation is low.

The project will also include provision of a Community Benefit Fund to support local projects, should the application receive consent.

Consultation

We are a community-led developer and have consulted closely with local communities, stakeholders and policy makers throughout the project planning process to understand concerns then use feedback to improve our designs.

After introducing our emerging proposals earlier in the year, we have been undertaking extensive environmental and technical studies to deliver the best possible scheme before submitting our detailed proposals to the Welsh Government.

These proposals, which have been influenced by a review of the feedback we received during our early engagement and further conversations with the community, form the basis of the 6-week statutory consultation we are currently undertaking.

You can view our detailed proposals, meet members of the project team and leave your feedback by visiting us during one of our consultation events:

2.30pm – 7pm, Tuesday 23 September 2025

Bodelwyddan Village Hall, Ronaldsway, Bodelwyddan, LL18 5TE

10am – 2pm, Wednesday 24 September 2025

Neuadd Owen Village Hall, Cefn, Saint Asaph, LL17 0EY

A feedback form will be available at the events and can also be completed online.

You can view all of our draft planning documents HERE.

Please send in your comments by Tuesday 21 October 2025.
